Boost winter output from your solar electric system: MPPT controllers 101

Charge controllers deliver year-round protection for your system by preventing battery damage due to overcharging or reverse current flow. But Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT) controllers take charge efficiency a step further.

By running PV modules at their maximum power point, usually 16 to 19 volts, MPPT controllers deliver an average of 15% more power to batteries throughout the year. Plus, since MPPT controllers work best with cold PV modules and hungry batteries — a typical scenario for off-the-grid systems in the winter — they can deliver up to 30% more power right when you need it most.

For a summertime boost, consider putting your panels on tracking mounts, which supply 30% more power for pumping and cooling applications by tracking the summer sun.
