A double Academy Award nominee this year, the brilliant Cate Blanchett didn't add any Oscars to her collection this year, but don't worry that she's not leading a fulfilling life. In addition to being one of Hollywood's most sought after actresses, she's been married for 10 years to playwright Andrew Upton and they're expecting their third son (!) in April. And as if that isn't enough, she and the hubby recently took over as co-artistic directors of the Sydney Theatre Company in her native Australia. "When the idea came up, I thought, Wow, that is something to do with your life," Cate recently told Marie Claire. "Of course, now we've got to go about the hard slog of enacting all our visions and ideas!" Such as? Making it the first theater company in the world to run on solar energy and rainwater. How about a round of applause for the lady, huh?
With three films in the works this year, Anna Faris's star is on the rise. Which means? She can now host Hollywood events and fabulous people will turn out. The Scary Movie star recently threw a party for the launch of an organic T-Shirt line by Alexx Jae at LA's trendy Milk boutique. Sales of the eco-chic tees -- made with organic cotton and bamboo and water-based inks and dyes -- benefit the Environmental Media Association.
Gwyneth Paltrow hasn't been acting much these days, so she probably didn't have to do much to clear her schedule to shoot her new UNICEF ad. (It probably just involved passing off her kids to her nanny.) The ad urges world leaders to honor their 2007 pledge for AIDS funding that would allow all pregnant women with HIV to receive treatment and care to ensure that their babies are born free from the virus. "According to UNICEF, a baby is born with HIV almost every minute of every day somewhere in the world," Gwynnie said in a statement. "The virus is passed from mother to child during the birth or pregnancy. I have just found out that this can be prevented for less than [two dollars] yet very few women in the poorer countries of the world can get the medicine they need to ensure their baby is born free from HIV. I hope that this new short film will raise awareness and funds about this issue and UNICEF will be able to reach every woman with the vital care and medicines they need. Please give the greatest gift you can."
I was soap opera obsessed growing up, which primed me for my first job at Soap Opera Digest, and I still like to keep tabs on the actors and actresses. So I was quite happy to see Amber Tamblyn -- formerly on General Hospital, who went on to appear on TV's Joan of Arcadia and in the Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants movies -- appear as a spokesperson for Sierra Club's campaign to cut 80% in carbon emissions by 2050 -- or 2 percent a year.
I don't usually read the Sports Illustrated swimsuit issue, but a free copy landed on my desk so I had to flip through... to see all the bathing suits that would never cover my behind (Not that most of those models -- like Heidi Klum or Leonardo DiCaprio gal pal Bar Refaeli were covered anyway). However, one of the shoot locations -- in San Juan del Sur -- took place at an ecolodge called Morgan's Rock, which uses solar panels to heat the water and food is produced on the property or caught on the bay. Guests are also asked for their dinner order at breakfast so the kitchen can avoid waste. Though I'm sure that wasn't an issue during the shoot -- it's not like the models were eating anyway.
