I love yoga. I love to experience different styles, different teachers, different philosophies. I haven't settled into any one body of teachings. Each one offers something unique and has its own rich heritage. I'm always curious to hear what works for people and what doesn't. Care to weigh in?
What is your favorite style of yoga? What works best for you and why? |

| I've never been a fan of the types of practices that require 110 degree heated room. Those just make me dizzy. LOL. Most teachers I've found have their own style that falls somewhere between hatha and ashtanga. |

I have only tried Iyengar, but I really love it.
However, maybe I should look into some other methods out of curiosity. I'll let you know if I find a new favorite. |

| The first I ever tried was Bikram and I love it. Your body feels amazing after sweating and stretching in the heat. It also makes you very aware of how much water you need.( 64 oz does not do it for me) |

| I've done a few types of yoga and I have to say the best all-body workout was Kundalini yoga. OMG I was sore after that! Plus it worked muscles everywhere on me. I really need to get back into that... |

| I did my teacher training in Kripalu, and that meditation-in-motion is still the foundation of my practice. But we're lucky to have so many styles to learn from. Iyengar is my touchstone for alignment; Ashtanga makes vinyasa practice richer and more challenging. I do wish the hot-yoga craze hadn't taken over so many studios. It's pretty unfriendly to middle-aged yoginis who have their own hot flashes to deal with. ;) |

| I have a good friend who does Bikram and she loves it. I have been dying to try it myself but it is a bit of a trek to the nearest studio. I am rather fond of Hatha. I had a private instructor when I was pregnant who mostly did Hatha I believe and I found it very relaxing not to mention it made me feel much less discomfort. The breathing and relaxation techniques saved my life during labor too. |

| I do a sorta mellow form of Bikram yoga, in a room heated to 88 degrees. The pace isn't quite that of the Ashtanga but when you are in a heated room, you really don't need to move that fast in order to sweat. I feels like I am doing yoga back in the womb. I am quite addicted - make it twice a week for 1.5 hours sessions or I get kinda punchy. |

My personal favorite is Ashtanga. I also appreciate hatha yoga as well. I turned to Ashtanga a year ago to use as a cross training practice in my long distance running career. I fell in love with it immediately. It allowed me to give up weight training all together, and to incorporate my daily meditation in the process. Not only has Ashtanga helped be to become a better runner, but a healthier, happier and more well balanced person. Ashtanga is definitely the perfect yoga practice for someone that craves power yoga punch in alignment with inward direction, and it takes a lot of patience and discipline. I believe the inward direction component in yoga is a critical element. That is where you really experience the sweetness in each pose and within yourself.Edited by: Joy Jackson, Life & Wellness Coach on Jan 8, 2008 1:59:20 PM |

I am a fan of trying every kind of yoga I can get my hands on. But ultimately I find I am drawn to a teacher, rather than a style. Ashtanga gets me in great shape but I usually only go when my favorite teacher is there. Forrest, same thing. Anusara has some great cues but I've never found a teacher I connected with. About Bikram, well...I am of the opinion that it is the Americanized, supersized version of yoga. But, it does bring a lot of people in that may have never tried yoga any other way, which is an amazing gift.
My favorite way to experience yoga is to take what works from every style and blend with a good dose of personal touch! |

| To clear up an ongoing misconception, all asana practice is hatha yoga. Hatha encompasses Ashtanga, Bikram, Iyengar etc. I believe alot of you are talking about vinyasa style yoga, flowing, incorporating pranayama, but not as vigorous or structured as Ashtanga. I'm not quite sure what Power yoga is, but I believe that all types of yoga have a time season and purpose. |
