Yoga with shoes?

I have to wear orthotics in my shoes because my arches are too high. I especially have to wear them when I work out.

I've noticed that when I practice yoga with bare feet, I have a lot of pain in my legs because I do not have the support for my arches and end up using my muscles differently than I use them during the rest of the day or during a different type of workout.

Is there such a thing as shoes that someone can do yoga with? So that I could place my orthotics in them and have the proper support while I am doing my yoga.

I would hate to have to give up yoga. But it's starting to become painful instead of a source of stress relief.

Thanks for any advice.

Lisa

Oh oh. If I don't get an answer to this question here, I have no idea where to find out?

Does anyone know where this kind of info would be available?

Thanks,
Lisa

Maybe ask a pediatrist?  When I had surgery on my foot my doctor created a "balerina pad" to support my foot.  Other than that I have no idea.  It may not be the best thought, but I would hate to leave you hanging with no thoughts at all.  I hope you can find a solution.  I have a problem with leg circulation and yoga is the least painful thing I can do.  Finding the right way to balance your health and injuries is one of the hardest things to do.  I wish you the best of luck.

Some people do use special slippers for yoga.  Depending on the pose, you might be able to work in athletic shoes with your orthotics.  The best thing to do is probably to check in with a yoga class and ask a teacher who can observe your practice for recommendations.  Good luck!

Have you tried sitting and lying down poses?  You could stand for one pose, then get off your feet for several poses, then try one on your feet again.  Pain is your body's way of telling you to be kind to yourself.

I would also consult a physical therapist for reommendations about a therapy program to strengthen the areas that are giving you concern.

Thirdly, IPATIENCE.  It took  a lifetime to create the body you currently have, it's going to take some time to build it into the body you would like it to be...

I would recommend asking your doctor, a yoga or Pilates teacher, or physical therapist for any foot stretches and massages that you could do on your own to help address your high arches.

Have you tried Iyengar Yoga? Teachers of that tradition have a deep understanding of anatomy and can really help you understand how to make poses work for you with helpful cues and props.

I also had a Pilates teacher who would recommend standing on a tennis ball and moving it under your foot. It's intense but definitely helps stretch the foot muscles.

When you watch TV or read, you could try lacing your fingers between your toes (holding hands with your feet in a way) and gently stretch the foot. There's also these flip-flop looking shoes called Yoga Sandals that help stretch the space between the toes.
