First, I just wanna say I love this place! I've lurked around for a while, but I'm finally posting because this place was really missing something: a thread for sexy interior decorating/design and furniture!

There's more to being Green than going zero waste and eating local or organic. Girls (and guys!), we can't forget about making our place look GOOD too, with cool, sexy and environmentally friendly stuff, and I'm not just talking about CFL's

I LOVE Treehugger because they always post about attractive and tasteful things for your apartment or house that will impress your girlfriends when they come over and also make you feel great about buying stuff that's made from sustainable materials.

If you haven't seen it yet, check out this amazing guide called "How to Green Your Furniture." It shows that you don't have to sacrifice style to decorate with the environment in mind. Also, the pictures alone are great and you can easily see that Green furniture is the sexiest furniture

*Edit* Forgot to ask - if you've found links to Green decorating and furniture that you love, please share them!

It'd be great to know about more designers that use recycled, reclaimed or sustainable materials to make their products. I'll also be posting links as I find them.

Here's another cool post from this week:

http://www.treehugger.com/files/2007/06/series_x_furnit.php

Check these out! They can be used as chairs, tables or footrests. Even though they're all wood, they really look comfy, and are super sustainable.

I'd LOVE to have a set of these. Can you imagine the possibilities?

You could have a nice place to sit or lay down after a long day, and a coffee table where you can put some goodies to snack on. If friends decide to drop by without calling, you won't have to worry about seating -- just flip the chair and voila!

Treehugger is awesome for stuff like that.

I found this yesterday: a cool, sleek foldable chair that folds to about 3cm, or 1 inch.

Check out:

Green Tour: Ozan and Brian's Thrifted Green Retreat

It's a different design sensibility than the modern stuff posted, but nonethelesss intriguing.

Wish I was having some homemade lemonade in their backyard right now.

Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum Show Design for the other 90%.
now through September 23

Design for the Other 90% demonstrates how design can be a dynamic force in saving and transforming lives, at home and around the world.

I wish I could check this exhibit out! No plans to go to NYC... as of yet.

“The majority of the world’s designers focus all their efforts on developing products and services exclusively for the richest 10% of the world’s customers. Nothing less than a revolution in design is needed to reach the other 90%.”
—Dr. Paul Polak, International Development Enterprises

Designers, engineers, students and professors, architects, and social entrepreneurs from all over the globe are devising cost-effective ways to increase access to food and water, energy, education, healthcare, revenue-generating activities, and affordable transportation for those who most need them. And an increasing number of initiatives are providing solutions for underserved populations in developed countries such as the United States.

Encompassing a broad set of modern social and economic concerns, these design innovations often support responsible, sustainable economic policy. They help, rather than exploit, poorer economies; minimize environmental impact; increase social inclusion; improve healthcare at all levels; and advance the quality and accessibility of education. These designers’ voices are passionate, and their points of view range widely on how best to address these important issues. Each object on display tells a story, and provides a window through which we can observe this expanding field.

I like the idea of sustainable design for a greater purpose. I don't have plans to go to NYC either, but this would be awesome to see.

That's the direction that Green design should go - toward making things that serve people from all walks of life. It's unfortunate that most Green designers make stuff that's out of reach for the average person.

Unfortunately, it's the same with organics - everyone raves about how great it is to eat only Organic and just how healthy it is. Sadly though, not everyone can afford to buy Naked fruit juices or pay $2+ for an organic avocado everyday.

I wish I had one of these in my room right now! I'd have so much more space.

Found it on Treehugger:

"If, everywhere, people stare, each and every day, and you can see them laugh at you, and you hear them say, "Hey, you've got to hide your bed away" then perhaps the LGM 007 hide away swivel wall bed unit is for you."

"Seriously, though, it's tough to beat the Murphy bed for super-efficient, space-saving, less-is-more bedroom design. So even if your name isn't John, Paul, George or Ringo (or even Eddie) and you want to live more (but have less), give 'em a peek. Hit the jump to get up close & personal with some more pics."

Answering Your Questions About “Organic”

What is organic? What does organic mean? These are two different versions of the most-asked question about organic. In a broad sense, organic simply means that it is made from animal or vegetable compounds. In the stricter sense that many of us have come to expect, organic means that only animal or vegetable materials were used in the making of the product from start to finish.
