Be nice to bugs! Garden without chemicals

I like this post on Greenoptions because I can't stand how people feel so entitled to their patches of grass that they use chemicals to eradicate anything that lives in or near it.

Cassie recommends another alternative for gardeners that are having a hard time keeping pests under control: introduce their natural enemy. Asking herself "What Would Nature Do?", she's turning to lacewings to keep the caterpillars in her garden in check.

I giver her a lot of credit and I think more gardeners should do the same. It's too easy to take the cheap way out and use chemicals, but we really should be thinking about how nature would handle this. I won't even get started on gophers or moles cause I'll start ranting.

Anyhow, if you've found creative and nature-friendly ways to control garden pests, please share them

I had millions of aphids on my peach tree and I ordered some live ladybugs over the internet (Call your local gardening store to see if they have them first) and released about 100 of them on the tree. By the next day it was clear of aphids. I had no idea ladybugs could eat so much!

Then I had some other pests in my greens garden so I just went out and got some Preying Mantis cacoons that supposedly have a few hundred babies in each of them. That should do the trick.

Just be careful not to introduce something that isn't indigenous to the area.

Great link I'm going to go read the article now. Thanks Joe!

I've had great luck getting rid of the aphids on my roses & mites off my water lillies just by putting  banana skins near them. After a day they brown up and you don't even notice them.  For the lillies we just put them on a rock nearby and a few small pieces right on the pad.

I have been fortunate and found that a simple solution of rosemary and water have kep the critters I don't want in my garden at bay.
For slugs and snails my Mom turned me onto concept of a copper strip of tape around the perimeter also does the trick.

Answering Your Questions About “Organic”

What is organic? What does organic mean? These are two different versions of the most-asked question about organic. In a broad sense, organic simply means that it is made from animal or vegetable compounds. In the stricter sense that many of us have come to expect, organic means that only animal or vegetable materials were used in the making of the product from start to finish.
